Bolton
Castle defines the mediaeval castle is all respects. Built over
18 years and completed in 1399 by Richard le Scrope, 1st Lord
Scrope of Bolton and Lord Chancellor of England, the castle is
one of the oldest private residences in the United Kingdome. This
historical landmark remains in the Scrope family to this day but
is open to visitors, and has been the site of many weddings and
movie shoots. Here you can discover the fascinating history, and
mystery, of the Scrope family legend.
Over
the years the castle has been a Royalist stronghold (during the
English Civil War), the captive home of Mary, Queen of Scots,
and host to countless galas and garden parties. Bolton Castle
boasts the highest vineyard in all of England, an orchard, its
own bowling green, and one of the most vibrant gardens in the
country.
