The Cirque Du Soleil

The Cirque in ActionEarly in the 1980s, a new tradition in circus entertainment was born. Blending the finer aspects of human performance with the frenzied atmosphere of street festivals, Cirque Du Soleil puts on one of the most entertaining shows around. But this is not your typical circus. There are no animals, and there is no centre ring. About as close as "The Cirque", as they are often called, comes to the traditional circus is the big top tent they tour with. Even the high wire acts are nothing like the expected two performers and a trapeze setup. The Cirque generates such rave reviews that their shows usually sell out very quickly.

One of the more interesting aspects of a Cirque show not found in the traditional circus is the theatrical story telling. Shows are designed with a specific theme in mind, and often tell a tale of great wonder. Some shows are more intentionally theatrical, like the renowned Quidam, while others are sheer spectacle at its finest.

With a show of this nature specific abilities are required. Performers are chosen from around the world based on those abilities and brought to Montreal. Then comes the training. Hours of training, every day, just to see if you are good enough to pull off these unique acts. Of course, some of the performers are left on their own (more or less) to perfect their talents. Like the juggler from Dralion, who is alone on stage during his act.

The Cirque in ActionAll shows, acts and music are created in the Cirque's 14,000 square foot headquarters in Montreal, Quebec. Here can be found training rooms and workshops dedicated to bringing something new to the stage every time out. An all-original score takes the audience on the journey, and costume designs often add a surreal element to the show. In any given show the sights and sounds will be fun and lively, at times sombre, but always moving.

Cirque Du Soleil is based out of Montreal, Quebec, but tours the world with a tent for 3,000. "Home shows" (non-touring shows with permanent venues) can also be found in Las Vegas, Nevada and Orlando, Florida. Wherever you find them, Cirque Du Soleil is definitely worth an evening.
